Rothenburg ob der Tauber rises above the Tauber River in Bavaria, where its medieval town center has stood largely unchanged for centuries, making it one of Germany’s most vivid windows into the past. This old walled city stretches along cobblestone streets where half-timbered houses, ancient towers, and narrow alleys invite visitors to wander and imagine life in the Middle Ages. The town’s Market Square (Marktplatz) anchors daily life, surrounded by the towering Town Hall and historic fountains, and visitors can explore the intact medieval walls that circle the town for views over rooftops and valley below.

A visit here brings stories and traditions to life. Each hour on the market square, the clock at the Ratstrinkstube performs the famous “Der Meistertrunk” tableau, a dramatic reenactment of a local legend from the Thirty Years’ War about how the mayor purportedly saved the town. This spectacle has become a highlight of a stay and is echoed in the annual Meistertrunk festival, a colorful event that celebrates that tale with processions and performances.
