Devon occupies England’s southwest peninsula, a county shaped by seafaring, farming, and long continuity of settlement. Its history stretches from prehistoric sites on Dartmoor through Roman roads and medieval ports to towns that grew wealthy on trade and shipbuilding. That layered past feels embedded rather than showcased, visible in market towns, stone churches, and working harbors.

The landscape shifts quickly across short distances. Two distinct coastlines, one facing the Atlantic, the other the English Channel, frame cliffs, coves, and broad estuaries, while inland areas open into rolling farmland and the open uplands of Dartmoor and Exmoor. Rivers cut deep valleys toward the sea, giving the county a sense of enclosure despite its long shoreline.

Devon’s atmosphere is steady and self-contained. Life tends to revolve around local centers rather than large cities, and the pace reflects long familiarity with land and weather.
