Galle, a coastal city in southern Sri Lanka, is a place where history and the sea are inseparably linked. Once a vital port on the spice trade routes, Galle reached its peak under Dutch colonial rule in the 17th century, when the massive Galle Fort was built. This UNESCO World Heritage Site still dominates the old town, its ramparts and bastions encircling cobbled streets lined with colonial-era villas, churches, and warehouses that now house boutique hotels, galleries, and cafés.

The city’s atmosphere is both cosmopolitan and relaxed, shaped by centuries of cultural exchange. Within the fort, narrow lanes reveal a blend of European and South Asian influences, while local markets bustle just outside the walls with fresh produce, seafood, and handicrafts. Mosques, temples, and churches coexist within walking distance, reflecting the diverse communities that have called Galle home for centuries.

Beyond the fort, Galle’s coastline offers golden beaches and a gateway to the Indian Ocean. Unawatuna and other nearby bays are popular for swimming, diving, and whale-watching excursions, while the palm-lined shore provides a slower rhythm of life.
